Privacy Policy

This policy explains what data alinekart.com collects, why, who else gets to see it, and what you can do about it. It is written in plain language on purpose.

Who is responsible: Alinekart, editorially directed by Amara Taylor, California, United States. Contact: hello@alinekart.com.

The short version

You can read every article on this site without giving us your name, your email address or an account. We do not sell personal information. The data that does get collected comes from three places: our server’s own logs, the advertising technology that funds the site, and anything you choose to type into a form or send us by email.

1. What we collect, and why

Server logs

Like essentially every web server, ours records requests: your IP address, the page requested, the date and time, your browser’s user-agent string, and the page you came from. This is used to keep the site running, diagnose errors and identify abusive traffic. Logs are retained for a limited period and then overwritten.

Information you give us

If you email us, we hold your message and your email address for as long as needed to deal with it and to keep a record of corrections. If you leave a comment, WordPress stores the name, email address and comment text you submit, plus your IP address, so that we can moderate it. If you submit a contact form, we receive what you typed into it. We do not add anyone to a mailing list without an explicit request.

Cookies set by this site

The site itself sets only functional cookies — for example to remember that you have already dismissed a notice, or to retain your details if you leave a comment so you do not have to retype them. These are not used to build a profile of you.

2. Advertising, and the cookies that come with it

This site is funded by advertising. Ads are served by third-party advertising technology providers, and we expect to serve advertising through Google AdSense. Those providers operate independently of us.

What this means for your data:

  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites.
  • Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and other sites on the internet.
  • Third-party advertising vendors and ad networks may also use cookies, web beacons or similar technologies to measure ad performance and to personalize what you see.
  • These vendors may receive your IP address, device and browser information, and data about the pages you viewed.

We do not have access to, or control over, the cookies these third parties set, and we cannot read them.

How to limit this. You can opt out of personalized advertising by Google in Google Ads Settings. You can opt out of personalized advertising by many other vendors through the Digital Advertising Alliance or Network Advertising Initiative opt-out pages. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings, though doing so may affect how some sites work. Opting out stops ads being personalized; it does not stop ads appearing.

Google’s own explanation of how it handles data when you use partner sites is published at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

3. Analytics

We use web analytics to understand which guides are read and where readers arrive from, in aggregate. Analytics providers may set cookies and process your IP address on our behalf. We use this to decide what to write next — not to identify individual readers, which we have no interest in doing.

4. Who we share data with

We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising in exchange for money.

Data is handled on our behalf by the service providers that make the site work: our web host, our content delivery and security provider, our analytics provider and our email provider. The advertising vendors described in section 2 collect data in their own right, as independent controllers. We will also disclose information where we are legally required to, or where it is necessary to protect the site against abuse or fraud.

5. Links to other sites

We link to manufacturers, standards bodies, regulators and retailers. Once you click through, you are on their site and their privacy policy governs what happens to your data. We are not responsible for their practices.

6. Your rights

If you are in California. Under the CCPA as amended by the CPRA, you have the right to know what personal information we have collected about you, to request its deletion, to request correction of inaccurate information, and not to be discriminated against for exercising those rights. You also have the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information; as stated above, we do not sell personal information.

If you are in the UK, EEA or Switzerland. You have the right to access the personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict or object to its processing, and to data portability. Where we rely on consent — for example for non-essential advertising cookies — you may withdraw it at any time. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your national data protection authority.

To exercise any of these rights, email hello@alinekart.com with “Privacy request” in the subject line. We may need to ask you for information to verify who you are before we act, and we respond within the period the applicable law allows.

7. Children

This site is intended for adults making purchasing decisions and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, write to us and we will delete it.

8. Data retention

Server logs are kept only as long as needed for security and diagnostics. Correspondence is kept as long as needed to deal with the matter and to maintain a record of any correction made to an article. Comments remain with the article unless you ask us to remove them. Analytics data is retained according to our analytics provider’s configured retention period.

9. Security

The site is served over HTTPS, and we take reasonable measures to protect the limited data we hold. No method of transmission or storage over the internet is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. Please do not send us sensitive personal information by email.

10. International transfers

The site is operated from the United States and our service providers may process data in the United States and elsewhere. If you access the site from outside the United States, you understand that your data may be transferred to and processed in a country with different data protection laws.

11. Changes to this policy

If this policy changes materially, the updated version will be posted here with a new date at the top. Where a change requires your consent, we will ask for it.
